Sunday brunch or roast lunch The Bull in Highgate packs a punch! Families, couples and tourists enjoy top British Cuisine in elegant yet casual surroundings.

Sundays at The Bull gastropub in Highgate is certainly one way of pleasing all the family. On a recent visit, a group of four adults and three little children are seen happily eating their stylish tucker seated at a large corner table with plenty of light coming through the large bay window. The mixture of baby bottles and red wine in elegant stemmed glasses strewn across the clothless surface seem somewhat incongruous in this sophisticated setting -- but at lunchtimes at the weekends this place is a sociable child friendly venue.

A More Intimate Ambience for Adults

At the other end of the room things are a little more formal and those without offspring can enjoy a more intimate ambience with tablecloths and a cozy fireplace. The Sunday Brunch menu has most of the classic egg dishes Eggs Benedict or Florentine , scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and welsh rarebit for a pleasant change.

A Traditional Lunch Rather Than Sunday Brunch

For those wishing to have a more traditional lunch the menu is straight forward British fare with the odd European dish. The Chicken Liver and Fois Gras Parfait served with toasted Brioche is light and tasty but the generous portion needs a second helping of brioche. The Celeriac Soup with Truffle Gnocci was delicate and wholesome but could have been less tepid.

Delicious Roast Beef and Yorksshire Pudding

However no complaints at all about The Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding, accompanied by roast potatoes, carrot and swede puree and delicious cauliflower cheese . The meat tender and pleasantly pink, the pud as light as an angels kiss with well cooked vegetables and homemade horseradish is a perfect ambassador for the best of British and makes up for most of the little glitches already mentioned.

A small selection of desserts boasting a very nice Bakewell Tart with clotted cream ice cream and a chocolate pudding light and not too sweet with a superior and creamy chocolate ice cream.

World Class Wine List

The wine list is what makes this place more of an upmarket restaurant. Great care has been taken in offering an excellent world class selection of red, white and pinks that would make a sommelier smile. The Chateau Pey La Tour 2006 a rich and fruity claret at £30 a bottle made a perfect partner with the succulent beef but there are many good wines from as little as £15 a bottle for some very good house wines.

A Game of Snooker After Coffee

Perhaps if the conversation gets a little tired there is a snooker table and a games room upstairs for those who would like a little lively distraction while digesting their food after coffee. A walk around Kenwood or Highgate Village in preparation of satisfying your appetite at the welcoming lunch at The Bull is the culmination of a perfect Sunday afternoon.
